Hiieko built the ventilation system for the Ülemiste City educational house

The first building of the educational complex being built in Ülemiste City in Tallinn will be home to the Tallinn International School and the Ülemiste Community Building. Hiieko built the building’s ventilation and smoke extraction system.

The building’s ventilation needs were diverse

The work was extensive and complex. The requirements for the ventilation system of a multifunctional building with a gross area of approximately 6,000 square meters are diverse, because it supplies fresh air to classrooms, catering, and the gym.

Rauno Mätas, development manager and board member of Mainor Ülemiste, which is developing Ülemiste City: “Our goal is to offer the younger talents of the campus a top-notch learning environment in the Ülemiste City Educational Complex. Good ventilation and fresh air are important factors in the physical learning environment, which directly affect the well-being of the entire school family. Since the building is versatile and has different functionalities, it was not an easy challenge, but thanks to an experienced and professional cooperation partner, the task was well solved.“

Innovative solution for protecting ventilation units on the roof

In order to have more space in the building, the ventilation units serving the first, second and third floors have been installed in an open chamber on the roof.

According to Rauno Varik, site manager of special parts at the main construction contractor NOBE, the biggest challenge was protecting the heating and cooling units of the ventilation units on the roof from the weather. Usually, these units are placed outside the units and an insulated box is built around them. But this is not the most aesthetically pleasing visually and requires opening for maintenance. In collaboration with Hiieko and the ventilation equipment manufacturer, an innovative solution was developed where the units are located inside the aggregates. This ensures both aesthetic appearance and technical functionality.

Protecting the piping installed on the roof from the weather was a large task for Hiieko’s craftsmen. The piping had to be measured in detail on site and covered with sheet metal parts supplied on a special order.

Good cooperation ensured a beautiful result

According to NOBE construction manager Priit Nigols, the cooperation partner Hiieko has shown commitment throughout the project and found quick and effective solutions even in difficult situations. Effective teamwork has made it possible to achieve the goal – to create a high-quality indoor environment in the future educational institution that meets modern requirements.

The work by Hiieko was completed in November 2024. The new building, along with the accompanying play, sports and recreation areas, is planned to be handed over to the Tallinn International School and the entire Ülemiste City community in the first half of 2025.

The educational complex was commissioned by Mainor Ülemiste AS, the construction general contractor was NOBE OÜ, and the ventilation project was carried out by GECC LP OÜ.

The ventilation equipment for the site was supplied by Airwave OÜ and the smoke extraction fans by Metaline OÜ; the piping and fittings for the large kitchen are from AS Onninen, other air distributors and piping are from ETS Nord AS, fire and heat insulation is from Saint-Gobain Eesti AS. We thank all our good partners for their cooperation!
